Robert “Archie” Bittenbender 84 of Middletown, passed away on August 8 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born June 21, 1942 to George K. and Alberta (Quinn) Bittenbender, who was the first female teacher at MMI. Archie was their only son and was also the beloved brother of his sister Nancy, and her husband Richard Gerlach of Freeland.
He grew up in a home centered on faith, learning, and family which shaped his character, values, and pursuits throughout his life.
He attended MMI and graduated from Freeland High in 1960. Then he served his country with pride in the Army Reserve as SP4. After his service, he went on to work at Prudential Insurance for 30 years, followed by a career at the White Haven Center where he compassionately cared for patients and would take them out on surprise visits to our family members.
Archie is survived by his loving partner of 40+ years, Dottie Laputka, who cared for him with love and devotion at their home until his last breath. Archie shared a special bond over the years with Dottie’s family, including her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Archies is also survived by his long-time separated wife and friend, Mary “Silky” (Gribosh) Bittenbender, with whom he shares:

He was known to many simply as Archie or PopPop, a testament to the deep affection and respect he inspired in all who knew him.
He had a heart of gold, only a phone call away, a listening ear, and always wheelin-n-dealin to get a good bargin.
After retirement, Archie and Dottie spent their time together on many home improvement projects, casino trips, and their daily adventures enjoying life and good food. They also enjoyed vacations to Delaware and Florida, fishing, and visiting family.
Archie was a lifelong member and Elder of the Freeland Presbyterian Church. Since its closure, he found a faithful home at Bethel Baptist Church where he attended service as often as possible. He was grateful for having met Pastor Jeremy Yadsko, his visits for prayer and communion, and special prayers.
Service will be celebrated on Sunday August 23, 2pm at Bethel Baptist Church 727 Ridge St. Freeland.
Friends may call at the church Sunday from 1 to 2 pm.
Burial will follow in Freeland Cemetery.
