Paul Mark Swerdon, age 77, of White Haven, Pennsylvania passed away on February 14, 2024, from complications caused by advanced Parkinson’s disease.
Paul was born on April 20, 1946, to parents Mary Schott and Nicholas Swerdon in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Paul graduated from St. Ann’s High School in Freeland, PA and went on to study Civil Engineering at Penn State University. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Paul began his accomplished career as a Professional Engineer with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. He went on to earn a Master of Science in Sanitary Engineering at Penn State University. In addition to a rewarding career with the Department of Environmental Protection, he used his education to design and build a successful business of his own, Valley Gorge Mobile Home Park, with his brother George.
Paul married Joan Helene Wood, in 1970 and went on to raise two beautiful children, Nicholas and Genna. After a full, successful career in engineering and business pursuits, Paul retired in 2000. In his retirement years, Paul and Joan enjoyed their time together traveling to visit family and favorite destinations.
Paul loved his life and family. He was an avid traveler, an inventor, an intellect, an athlete, an artist, and a family man. He was also firmly devoted to his Byzantine Catholic faith. Paul enjoyed running, skiing, and exploring America’s National Parks. He enjoyed his hobby of designing model trains. He holds a patent for his own invention. He served as a role model and set the best example for his children and everyone in his life. He bravely battled the challenges of his diagnosis for many years while continuing to pursue the activities that he loved, even when it seemed impossible.
Paul is survived by his wife Joan, his children Nicholas in Utah and Genna in State College, his brother George, and his five grandchildren.
Office of Christian Burial will be celeberated on Saturday 12 noon at St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, 643 Fern St. Freeland.
Friends may call at the McNulty Funeral Home 494 East Butler Dr. Freeland on Friday from 6 to 8pm and Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30am. Panahida will be celebrated Saturday morning.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, or PreBorn! (preborn.org). PreBorn! is a dedicated non-profit, pro-life organization that supports life-affirming pregnancy clinics in their mission to reach women considering abortion.
