Joseph Banyas, 89, of Freeland passed away Tuesday October 4, 2022 at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazleton.

Born October 24, 1932 in Freeland he was the son of the late Michael and Anna (Soltis) Banyas.

He graduated from Foster Township Highschool in 1950 where he played on the basketball team. After high school, he was honorably discharged from the Navy to join the Air Force where he served in Japan during the Korean conflict as a radar technician. Upon his honorable discharge from the Air Force, he returned home and was employed at Tobyhanna Army Depot becoming an electronics supervisor.

He was of the Byzantine Catholic faith where he was an active member of St. Mary’s B.C. Church in Freeland and he would spend his time as a volunteer making pierogies as well as helping to maintain the parish cemetery.

Joe was a jack of all trades and tireless worker with extensive skills in electronics, mechanics, automotive repair, construction, and plumbing and was always eager to help others with their projects. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and was an avid hunter and fisherman who had a great love for the outdoors. He is remembered as a dog lover, always being seen driving around town with his shelties perched with their heads out the window.

Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were brothers; John, Andrew, Michael, and Stephen. Sisters; Helen and Anna. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, the former Geraldine Contress. Son; Joseph and his wife Joan- Freeland. Granddaughter; Lauryn. Brother-in-Law; Nelson Contress. Several nieces and a nephew also survive.

Private Office of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Freeland.

Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Mary’s B.C. Church, 643 Fern St. Freeland Pa. 18224 in his memory.

McNulty Funeral Home 494 East Butler Dr. Freeland is in charge of arrangements.
