Thomas P Banyas, 72, of Columbia,MD. passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 14 at INOVA Fairfax hospital in Fairfax, VA.
Born in Hazleton on March 29, 1946, Tom was the son of Joseph J. and Veronica S. Banyas of Hemlock St.,Freeland, PA
Tom was a 1964 graduate of Foster Township High School in Freeland and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Bloomsburg State (PA)University in 1972. He also served honorably in the US Air Force from 1964 through 1968.
Following college,Tom was employed by the US Government in a variety of audit and accounting capacities culminating with the National Security Agency at Fort Meade,MD.
An avid golfer in retirement (3 hole in ones), he spent his later years being a terrific “Pop-pop” to his grandsons Owen and Jack and a caring, generous great uncle to niece Elizabeth and nephews Peter, Matthew, Noah, Nicholas and Nathan. In addition, Tom was always available to help his family and friends with whatever household problems required his considerable carpentry, electrical and plumbing skills. His generosity of spirit was unparalleled.
Tom is survived by his son Michael, daughter-in-law Courtney and their sons Owen and Jack of Annandale,VA. Also, he leaves a brother,Joseph G. Banyas and wife Theresa of Lake Harmony, PA, nephews Jeffrey and wife Ania of Elicott City, MD., Joseph J. Banyas and wife Andrea of Stamford, CT, and niece Mary-Grace Banyas and partner Charles McIlhaney of Nazareth, PA
A memorial observance was held Elicott City on Saturday October 20.
Interment ceremony will be celebrated at 11 am Saturday, October 27 at Ss. Peter’s and Paul’s EGC cemetery in Freeland.
The family asks that , in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN.
