Elizabeth F. Lutz, age 90 of Freeland, and more recently a resident of Broomall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, died Tuesday, December 4 while under hospice care.
Born in Highland, Betty as she was widely known, was the daughter of John and Anna (MacNamara) Broskoskie.
A woman of deep Catholic faith, Betty was a member of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Parish at St. Ann’s Church, Freeland. She was active in the church choir and continued to enjoy singing throughout her life. Betty often prayed for family and friends struggling with medical or emotional problems. She also prayed daily to express her gratitude for blessings God provided.
A child of the Depression Era, Betty developed a knack for reusing before recycling became fashionable. For example, worn clothing would be donated to a neighbor to make patch quilts and rag rugs; empty glass jars became storage containers; wrapping paper on gifts was carefully opened so it could be reused in the future.
Prior to retiring, Betty was a sewing machine operator for Cambridge Manufacturing. Her love of sewing became a pastime as she would volunteer to sew for others if someone needed hemming, a clothing repair, a Halloween costume, etc.
Daily, Betty looked forward to her cups of coffee. To her, coffee, chocolate, bread, turkey, and mashed potatoes were essential to a daily diet. Betty’s idea of heaven was “all the bread I can eat and great baked goods”. Her family knows she won’t be disappointed!
Betty never wanted to learn to drive a car and therefore she could be seen frequently walking around Freeland regardless of weather, to get groceries, visit friends, and attend church. She was known as a kind soul who was generous of heart, frequently giving of her time to help neighbors, friends, and family.
Betty is predeceased by her husband Anthony, brother Charles; and sisters Ann, Margaret, and Alice. She is survived by her daughters Lorraine Honig and Teresa Zinger, 3 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, 2 great grandchildren, and other extended family members.
Funeral services will be held at St. Ann’s Church, 898 Centre Street, Freeland on Saturday December 15. Viewing will be from 11:00 a.m. to noon at the church, with a mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at noon. Burial will follow at St. Ann’s Cemetery, Freeland. McNulty Funeral Home of Freeland is handling all funeral arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Betty’s name can be made to a local animal shelter.
