Eleanor Banja 90, entered God’s Kingdom on Angel’s Wings and into the arms of her beloved husband Edward Sunday, July 1, 2018.
Born in McAdoo December 25, 1927 she was the daughter of the late Ella DeStefano and John Pohida. After marriage she moved to Easton and later to Freeland to raise her family.
She was a devoted and loving mother of 5 children; Bernadette DeMelfi and husband Joseph, Edward Banja and wife Arlene, John Banja and wife Dolores, Gloria Balas and husband Matthew, and Michael Banja and wife Beth.
She was blessed with 20 grandchildren Joel DeMelfi, Edward Banja and wife Holly, Robin Banja and partner Mike Hanaway, Elena Perrigen, Tina Garcia and husband Ron, Danielle Belisle and husband Pete, Jimmy Banja and wife Sophie, Jonathan Banja, Matthew Balas and Fiancée Katie Wildes, Marc Balas and partner Lisa Molendini, Laura Balas and partner Wendy Resheter, Michael Balas and partner Allison Williams, Leandra Balas and partner Julie Bidwell, Lindsey Balas and partner Jason Hughes, Amanda Webster and husband Richard, Britnie Banja, Cassie Banja and Fiancé Juan Garcia, Alysha Milore and partner Michael Hoffmaster, Kyra Gutierrez, and Kyle Gutierrez.
26 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren.
She is also survived by her sister; Irene Malloy and brother; Richard DeStefano and many nieces and nephews.
She was a devout member of Saint Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Freeland.
She was a past member of Saint Mary’s Choir, a dedicated church pirohi worker and current member of the alter and rosary society.
Her love and talent for sewing began at an early age leading to her career in the garment industry working in local factories, In 1979 she co-founded the Pin Cushion creating custom clothing and alterations and later Pin Cushion Bridals until her retirement.
She loved traveling to New York City for Bridal Week and especially enjoyed working with brides and their families.
She loved cooking and baking especially during the holidays, passing down family recipes and traditions and teaching the importance of family and heritage.
She was preceded in death by her husband; Edward in 2015, her mother; Ella DeStefano, Father; John Pohida, Step-father; Dominic DeStefano, sister; Esther Catalano, infant sister; Maryann DeStefano, brother; John Pohida and sister in law; Maryann DeStefano.
Funeral will be held Friday 9:30am from the McNulty Funeral Home 494 East Butler Dr. Freeland. Divine Liturgy with Office of Christian Burial 10am in St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Freeland.
Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 5 to 8pm.
Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Panahida service will be celebrated Thursday evening at the funeral home.
